CBD for Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia has a wide range of symptoms that are broadly categorized as positive, negative and cognitive. Currently, available medication can effectively treat positive symptoms that include delusions and hallucinations. However, it is not so effective in treating negative and cognitive symptoms such as reduced speaking, blunted feelings, difficulty paying attention or concentrating as well as comprehending new information.
While positive symptoms may get treated with antipsychotics medications, it may lead to side effects such as muscle spasms, drowsiness, restlessness or dizziness. Sometimes, it can also lead to increased risk of diabetes, weight gain, and high cholesterol.
Evidence from research studies has suggested that CBD, being neuroprotective, could be effective for treating the more challenging symptoms of schizophrenia. As CBD was found to be able to restore recognition and social behavior to normal levels, the experiments concluded that CBD might be able to treat some of the symptoms of schizophrenia that are seemingly resistant to existing medications.
